Ireland is one of the most beautiful
and scenic countries in the world and offers a unique
driving experience for all its visitors.
The country’s road system, which extends through all
urban and rural areas, is improving each week and has
been the subject of huge government and European
investments for many years. As much as many of
Ireland’s country roads are unique and charming in
their own way, the overall road network is very similar
to that of other countries. If you wish to avail
of care hire in Ireland then there are a number of
important things that you must remember.
All driving in Ireland takes place
on the left side of the road and it’s
important that new drivers adhere to this strictly and
turn left on all roundabouts. Speed limits on
major roads outside built-up areas vary from 60
- 120 km/h. All road signs are in English
and are comparable to International design –
experienced drivers should have no trouble in touring
Ireland in comfort and safety.
When hiring
cars in Ireland it is essential that you are aware
of all the relevant documentation that you will need.
Firstly, you will require a current, valid EU or
American driving license as well as your
passport for identification. You must be at least
21, (although some car hire firms may induce extra
charges to those aged between 21 and 25) and possess a clean
license for at least 12 months prior to hiring
the vehicle. You will also need a minimum of third
party liability car insurance to drive your hired
vehicle in Ireland. If you are bringing your own
car you must check with your insurance company before
you leave to confirm that you will be fully covered to
drive here.
As in all countries, it goes without
saying that you when you are driving and using car
hire in Ireland, you must be extremely diligent and
practice caution at all times. In
particular, take care at junctions, roundabouts and at
especially busy times of the day. In the
unfortunate event of an accident it is vital that you stay
at the scene and ring the Gardai (Police) as
quickly as possible. As a driver involved in an
accident, you are required to give all your details, and
evidence of insurance to the Garda at the scene.
If there is no Garda present all those involved in the
accident, and preferably an independent witness should
be given this information. Also, it is important
that you make your Irish car rental company
aware of all such incidents.
There are many beautiful sights and
attractions waiting for you in Ireland and the car is by
far the best way to explore them all. As long as
you take care, drive carefully and adhere to all
the rules, you will have an unforgettable time
here.
