Tips
for Driving in Ireland
We
at carrentalsireland.com want you to have a safe journey when
driving in Ireland and we hope the following tips will help you
have a safer experience with your Irish
car rental.
Drive
on the Left
When
driving in Ireland all traffic drives on the left hand side of the
road which can be difficult to adjust to if you are coming from a
country that drives on the opposite side of the road. We suggest
that you first take your Irish car hire for a test drive before
attempting to drive on any major roads; this will help you adjust
to the controls of the car and also driving on the left.
You will see signs on the road reminding you that traffic flows on
the left in Ireland but be particularly careful at junctions as
this can be very confusing & dangerous until you get used to
driving on the left.
Check
the Irish weather
Before
setting out on any car journey in Ireland make sure to check the
Irish weather, local of national, so you will be well aware of the
weather conditions and road conditions on your journey. The Irish
weather is well known to change fast so doing periodic checks on
the Irish weather is a good idea. We recommend in checking with
the National Roads Authority of Ireland and their Weather
Station information.
Speed
Limits
If
you are using an Irish car hire and plan on driving on Irelands
road you should be fully aware of our speed limits for your own
safety, that of your passengers and also other road users.
There
are a number of different Irish speed limits to be aware of when
driving on Ireland roads.
Town
and city speed limits - (50 km/h)
National road speed limits - (100 km/h)
Regional and local speed limits - (80 km/h)
Motorway speed limits - (120 km/h)
These
speed limits may change without notice so we advice to keep in
check with Road traffic speed limits in Ireland from the Irish
eGovernment resource
Child
laws & Seat belts.
Any
child that is under the age of 12 is not permitted in the front
seats of any vehicle and it is "compulsory" that all
children use a seat belt but this is also the same for adults. Its
common sense to belt up for everyone's safety or you could end up
in an Irish court of law.
Don't
Drink & Drive
The
legal tolerance limit is 0.08% but we suggest for everyone's
safety that you do NOT drink and drive, even if it’s just one.
The Garda
Siochana (Police) is extremely strict on drink driving and now
has the power to do road spot checks for any drink drivers. Our
Irish courts do not take lightly to drink drivers so if caught you
could face a high fine or even a prison sentence.
Mobile
& Cell Phones
Just
recently Irish law passed banning the usage of mobile cell phones
when driving as these devices easily distract a driver which is
unsafe. You are however allowed to use hands free mobile phones so
make sure your phone is setup for this before setting off.
Give
Way on Roundabouts
Roundabout,
also known in the United States as a rotary, helps break up
traffic in built up areas. In Ireland traffic goes clockwise on a
roundabout and you must give way to any traffic that is coming
from the right. A roundabout is not difficult to use but we advise
that you take precaution when approaching a roundabout for the
first time.
Parking
in Urban Areas
Parking
in urban areas will usually require you to display a parking disk
in your car. These pay and display disks can be purchased from
news agents or from machines at the side of the road. Failure to
display a ticket in these areas will result in your car being
clamped or towed away.

you leave your vehicle unattended always lock it and don't leave
